US group Hilton said the company planned to build two hotels in Macau following an agreement with Las Vegas Sands which already has a casino in the special administrative region of China.
The two hotels, Hilton and Conrad with 1200 and 300 rooms respectively, will be located in Cotai Strip where there were several casinos and hotel complexes are being built. Both hotels are currently under construction.
Another contract is being finalized between Las Vegas Sands and Starwood Hotels to build a Sheraton and a St. Regis hotel in the Cotai Strip. Both of the hotels are now under construction.
Malaysian group Shangri-la Hotels and Resorts will also manage a 1,500-room hotel and the Hong Kong group Mandarin Oriental, which already has a hotel in Macau, will open a second luxury hotel on the peninsula next to the Lisboa, Galaxy and Wynn casinos.
A number of International hotel chains such as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Accor/Sofitel, MGM Mirage and Australia’s Crown will also manage hotels associated to Macau casinos. Some of these hotels have been approved by the government and construction is underway.
At the end of 2005 Macau had 444 hotels with over 10,000 rooms. Over the next ten years Macau will plans to build a further 53 hotel units with a total 26,572 rooms, 10,352 of which will be in the units currently under construction in order to fit in the demands.
