Dairy Queen to set foot in Macau

Dairy Queen (DQ) - an international chain of soft serve and fast food restaurants, is planning to open its first stores in Macau this year, Reuters reported.

Owned by American Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., the company said Hon Hoi Group (International) Co. has plans to open a DQ in Macau this spring and a second location in the territory later this year.

Based in Minneapolis, Dairy Queen said it had more than 5,700 stores in 19 countries, including 652 locations outside the United States and Canada.

The Heritage Foundation has released the 2010 Report on the Index of Economic Freedom. The Foundation’s 2010 Report says that Macau, as a free port, has long been benefitting from global trade and investment. The overall entrepreneurial environment incorporates high efficiency and low-tax, while property rights are well respected. Foreign investors can conduct business on the same terms as locals. Sound regulatory regime assures free flows of financial resources. Since the open-up of the gaming industry in 2002, Macau has attracted more foreign investors, spurring tourism and overall consumption. Other areas of growth include finance, insurance, and real estate.

Macau’s overall score has improved slightly by 0.5 from a year earlier to 72.5, making it the 20th freest among 179 economies worldwide, up one place from the year before. Macau is ranked 6th in the Asia-Pacific region while its overall score is well above the world and regional averages.

The study covers economies in different regions across the world, which have been assessed with 10 factors of economic freedom. Macau ranks relatively high in factors such as trade freedom, investment freedom, fiscal freedom, monetary freedom and financial freedom.

The world’s biggest casino company - Harrah’s Entertainment is seeking to bring the Caesars Palace to Macau. The plans were disclosed by its chairman and chief executive Gary Loveman in an interview. Harrah’s has owned a golf course on Cotai since 2007.

"There's nothing immediately active that could lead us there," Loveman tells Bloomberg. "We've made it very clear we would like to see the Caesars Palace brand in Macau. We certainly recognize there are six licensees, and somehow or other it has to fit through that lens."

However, entering the local market would require working jointly with an existing operator, as the limit of licences is six. The brand has already held preliminary talks with unnamed Macau operators. Besides, Harrah’s is also trying to expand in other parts of Asia, and in the United States, in particular in Massachusetts and Ohio.

Harrah’s Entertainment own four properties in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and seven on the Las Vegas Strip, including Caesars Palace.

SJM (Sociedade de Jogos de Macau) propose to build a four star James Bond theme hotel at the Cotai Strip. This move is to increase their market share in the Macau's gaming industry even further from the current 30%.

Currently the company owns two piece of lands at Cotai, the four star hotel will be built at one of these land, with an area of 10000 sq m.

澳門博彩股份有限公司表示, 公司擬於澳門路氹興建以占士邦為主題的四星級酒店, 望公司於市場佔有率於目前的三成再增多幾個百分點。 公司於路氹持有兩幅土地, 其中一幅約１萬方米的土地打算建一座四星級酒店, 而酒店設施將以邦女郎為主題。

The 14th Macau International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) will be held at The Venetian Macau from 22nd to 25th this month. The event is an economic and trade exhibition to promote international co-operation and exchange in investment and trade, as well as a prestigious annual event among the business sectors in Macau.

This year’s the MIF will focus on Macau’s economic diversity and present Macau’s achievements, promote Macau’s investment environment and market dynamics, explore future development and further advance Macau as a trade and economic cooperation service platform. It will take advantage of Macau’s as a positive regional business position, and close ties with the Portuguese speaking countries and internationally.

Over 60 countries and regions from the European Union, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Portuguese speaking countries have confirmed their attendance. The event will attract more than 644 local exhibitors and 1,074 international participants, while Russia, Laos, Cambodia, Columbia, Cuba, and Peru are participated for the first time in this international event. The Portuguese speaking countries pavilion will be the largest ever and Taiwan’s pavilion will have its size more than double.

貿促局初步收集簽署的合約金額約為30億澳門元。 包括來自世界各地超過2,383個新增商業配對項目。 其中1,849個為投資合作項目, 特許及連鎖經營品牌代理合作項目共158個, 供應項目共275個, 採購商採購項目共101個。

Galaxy to buy land site in Macau 銀河娛樂購澳門土地建綜合渡假酒店 (银河娱乐购澳门土地建综合渡假酒店)

Galaxy Entertainment said on 11st September it would pay US$366 million for a land site in Macau. It will plans to develop a complex including hotel, apartment and gaming facilities. The site is located in Cotai, covered 440,248 square metres with a total buildable gross floor area of 1.7 million square metres.

Currently, Galaxy Entertainment is building a property called the Galaxy Macau on the parcel, which sits next door to Las Vegas Sands Corp's massive Venetian Macau. But there is plenty of space to develop future projects on the 4.7 million square foot parcel. Meanwhile, The Galaxy Macau could open as soon as late next year, featuring two 1,500-room hotel towers.


銀河娛樂宣佈斥資28億購入一幅澳門土地, 獲澳門政府批地, 購入一幅位於路氹鄰近望德聖母灣大馬路及蓮花海濱大馬路地盤面積44.02萬平方米土地, 擬建綜合渡假酒店。 該地皮可發展為可建總樓面面積170.37萬平方米的酒店、公寓式酒店、博彩、娛樂、休閒及其他相關設施, 以及29.3萬平方米的室外綠化範圍。

銀河娛樂已於9月10日支付地價首期款項11.6億澳門元, 餘額另加按年利率5％計算之利息, 將由承授人平均分八期每半年支付。

銀河娛樂指, 公司正在興建的大型綜合渡假酒店發展項目乃位於該物業之內, 除發展該項目外, 物業亦為公司提供土地儲備用作發展其他階段。 預期2017年10月前竣工。

Shun Tak Holdings Ltd announced that the Icelandic consortium has backed out of its contract to buy Tower 4 of One Central Residences - a luxury high-rise development on the Macau waterfront, due to the Icelandic currency and financial system imploded.

The consortium signed a contract in October 2006, to spend $4410 per square ft purchasing all 68 apartments of Block Four at One Central Residences.

The average selling price for Tower 4 of One Central Residences amounts to $5000 per square ft. Units will be available for sale at the end of this year. It was also asking about $12000 to $13000 per square ft for the 15 special units, and expected to fetch over $20,000 per square ft for the penthouse (triple floors) units development. The service apartment will be available for public sale in 2010.

SmarTone - only bidder for Macau's fourth 3G licence 數碼通獨投澳門3G第四個牌 (数码通独投澳门3G第四个牌)

After Macau Telecommunications Regulation Bureau (DSRT) launched a tender for the fourth 3G mobile licence, Hong Kong-based cellco SmarTone became the sole bidder for this final 3G mobile licence. The result will announce whether SmarTone’s bid has been accepted at the end of August.

The DSRT also believes that this move would bring in ‘positive competition’ to the market, which could possibly lead to a reduction in service charges. SmarTone said the company is ‘ready to provide new and innovative services’.

There are over 230,000 3G service users representing over a quarter of the Macau subscription market. The number of subscribers signing up for 3G services are increasing 10,000 customers every month, which represents a penetration rate of more than 40% of the mobile market.

Melco unveils new Altira brand 皇冠正式易名新濠鋒 (皇冠正式易名新濠锋)

Melco Crown Entertainment has announced the rebranding of its Taipa property Crown Macau to Altira Macau. Melco Crown Entertainment co-chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho and Altira Macau president Ted Chan, introduced the new Altira Macau brand in a logo unveiling ceremony.

The rebranding was to distinguish the market positioning of the firm’s City of Dreams complex in Cotai. This replacement represents a new brand of gaming - uniquely Asian-oriented high roller gaming and entertainment concept, and hospitality service concept. As this will strengthen the Company's existing portfolio of globally recognized and respected brands in the gaming and hospitality sectors.

The name Altira derives from the Latin word ‘altus’, meaning “high”, whilst its Chinese name means “cutting edge”, representing an outstanding service proposition for the Asian high roller gaming market.

The Crown branding is to be used for the new City of Dreams development, which is scheduled to open in June.

Macau ranks 21st freest economy in the world 澳門經濟自由度全球排21 (澳门经济自由度全球排21)

According to Heritage Foundation’s 2009 Report, Macau appeared for the first time in the Index of Economic Freedom for 2009. This year Macau was ranked 21st out of a total of 179 countries and territories. Macau scored 72 percent and ranked 6th followed by Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Japan in the Asia-Pacific region. The report classified Macau as a region with "relative freedom".

The index measures economic freedom within 10 specific categories, Macau achieved its high scores in the categories of government, freedom of trade, monetary freedom, investment and financial freedom. According to the foundation, Macau has an open and dynamic free market economic system which has high levels of effectiveness and modern in operational terms. It also noted that whilst foreign investors and local traders carrying out their business, they can enjoy the same conditions.

Land to be sold at 'Fu Cheung bay' - Hengqin Island 橫琴島百億建'海洋主題樂園'

Zhuhai will auction 1,320,000 sq m of land at 'Fu Cheung bay' next year January. The land is used for the purpose to construct a large scale Ocean Amusement Park. Project total investment amounts to MOP$10 billion and occupies a land area of five sq kilometers. The project preliminary design plan has reviewed and MOP$5 billion will be invest in the first phase of the project.

The project will consist of an international standard sea world, marine theme park, night zoo, sea world circus, hotels, conventional centers and residential facilities. Construction is expected to complete before 26th Dec, 2012. This theme park will covers southeastern part of Hengqin Island. Once it completes, it will becomes the largest Ocean Park ever built in China and in the Asia Region.

Speymill Macau Property Company Plc said it has acquired one of the only few Grade-A office buildings in Macau - AIA Tower for HK$600 million. Located at the heart of the Central Business District of Macau, the investment in AIA Tower has been made through the acquisition of Cayman Island company's entire issued share capital - Turbo Ventures Ltd.

AIA Tower has 292,335 sq ft (27,160 sq m) of office space, 80,396 sq ft (7,470 sq m) of spaces which cater for the various retail tenants including Starbucks at the bottom levels, as well as 186 car parking spaces. The capital values of the AIA Tower are priced at over MOP$3200 per sq ft only, as this will demonstrates a significant upside potential for office investments. The currently contracted occupancy rates for the AIA office and retail space are 93% and 71% respectively.

"We are very pleased with this acquisition - an investment which we believe provides an opportunity to capture the growth in the office sector in Macau and offers potential for significant rental growth on the back of strong demand for commercial space. SJM to invest project worth MOP $18.7 billion over the next four years in Macau 澳博未來4年投資187億發展/重建數個項目 (澳博未来4年投资187亿发展/重建数个项目)

SJM Holdings - owned by Stanley Ho is planning to spend MOP$21 billion developing casino projects in Macau over the next four years, including the redevelopment of the Lisboa Hotel Complex and the starting of a number of new casino projects.

SJM is bringing MOP$12 billion investment to redevelop the original Lisboa hotel site, with construction expected to take place from next year to 2012. L'Hermitage, a casino which target on richer clients, due to be completed in the third quarter of 2008. Another project called L'Arc (Le Royal Arc) casino locate inside a residential tower opposite the Lisboa - Le Royal Arch Tower, the casino will include a boutique members' club casino with 32 VIP gaming tables. It is expected to complete at the beginning of next year.

There are also plans for two developments on the Cotai strip, one to be completed in 2010 and the other to be finished in 2012. One of this development plan at Cotai Strip is the MOP$5.3 billion casino hotel called the Pearl which included entertainment, conventional center, hotel and service apartment all within inside the complex. The Pearl is located in a small 100,000 sq ft site across the street of Venetian Macau.

The original site of the New Yaohan Department Store will turn into a mass-market casino, the site was purposed for the development of Oceanus project previously. Further information will be realise soon.

Speymill Macau agrees US $132 million residential deal

Speymill Macau Property Company it had struck a $132 million deal to forward-fund the development of an upmarket residential building in Macau. The company has agreed to buy 259 units in the project from local developer Companhia de Construcao e Investimento Ho Chun Kei Limitada. These units are due for handover in 2010 (With units ranging from approximately 870 square feet gross floor area for 2-bedroom units to approximately 1,300 square feet gross floor area for 3-bedroom units, The development will consist of 4 towers). 30% of the total consideration is to be settled immediately with the rest payable upon completion.

"We remain confident in the demand for modern housing units in a supply-constrained economy that is growing its labour force very rapidly," said by director Peter Churchouse.

Zhuhai Macau Cross-border Industrial Zone

The zone was set up as a state-level development zone, covers an area of 0.3 km2 in Zhuhai and 0.1 km2 in Macau. It implies the same favorable policies as the free trade zones, which officially went into operation as a bonded area on 8 December 2006.

The industrial zone is divided into two sections, the Zhuhai Park which comes under the administration of the Zhuhai government and the Macau Park which comes under the administration of the Macau SAR government. The two parks are separated by a waterway and are connected by a special customs port channel.

In 2003, mainland China and Macau signed the "Mainland and Macau Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement" (CEPA), which is an FTA-like arrangement for closer economic and trade links. Under the CEPA, Macau products are implemented with zero tariffs. Later in 2005 and 2006, the two parties signed more supplementary agreements for facilitating trade and investments. After the implementation of CEPA, more investments from Macau and rising foreign trade value with Macau are expected.
